About the NMa

The Netherlands Competition Authority (NMa) enforces fair competition between businesses in the marketplace. Competitors are, for example, not allowed to make price agreements with each other. If they do, the NMa takes action against them. In markets that have not completely become free markets yet, such as the energy and transport markets, the NMa puts in a great deal of effort to reach that goal. In those situations, the NMa creates preconditions. This is called regulation. All of our efforts are aimed at bringing benefits to consumers.

 

Organization

 

The NMa’s full name is Netherlands Competition Authority (or Nederlandse Mededingingsautoriteit in Dutch). The NMa is an independent government organization. The NMa enforces government policy. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation writes most of the laws the NMa enforces.

What the NMa does

 

In order to protect competition in the Netherlands, the NMa carries out various activities. These include educating companies about competition and legal regulations. In addition, we carry out investigations into possible violations. In case of violations, we can impose fines.
