Organization
The NMa’s full name is Netherlands Competition Authority (or Nederlandse Mededingingsautoriteit in Dutch). The NMa is an independent government organization. The NMa enforces compliance with the Dutch Competition Act and with a number of specific laws for the energy and transport industries.The NMa employs approximately 400 highly qualified staff members. The NMa has a Board, four departments and two supporting departments.
Board
The Board is the governing body of the NMa. The Board consists of a chairman and two members. The Board is supported by the Strategy and Communications Department and by a Chief Legal Counsel. The NMa has an Office of the Chief Economist (EB). The EB applies economic insights and carries out economic analyses. The EB subsequently makes statements with regard to competition and antitrust-law matters.
Departments
Within the NMa, two departments enforce the Dutch Competition Act: the Competition Department (DM) and the Legal Department (JD). These two departments are charged with oversight on all industries of the Dutch economy.
The Office of Energy and Transport Regulation (DREV) regulates the energy industry and the transport markets. With regard to transport, it regulates the rail market, aviation market, public transport markets, and the pilotage industry, and it enforces laws that the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment writes.
In order for the NMa to operate effectively, it has another supporting department: the Corporate Services Department (DBV).
